Theory

a) definition

sentence : word or combination of words capable of representing the complete statement of an idea (Dictionnaire Le Robert, 2022)

b) simple sentences

a simple sentence expresses a single idea and usually includes two or three elements (subject, verb and complement)

the subject does the action

the verb is the action

the complement undergoes the action

Le robot pétrit le pain.

The robot kneads the bread.

 adverbs and adjectives may be added

the adjective is a word qualifying the noun to which it relates and with which it agrees

the adverb is an invariable word which alters the meaning of the sentence unit to which it relates

Des robots intelligents prendront bientôt le contrôle.

Intelligent robots will soon take control.

c) complex sentences

a complex sentence is composed of several simple sentences, therefore expressing several ideas and

indicating the links that unite them

bound by a conjunction

Il nettoie le mur et elle taille le buisson.
He’s cleaning the wall and she’s pruning the bush.

bound by a relative pronoun

Elle taille le buisson qui plaît au robot.
She’s pruning the bush that the robot likes.

bound by ponctuation

Le robot les regarde : le travail est terminé.

The robot is looking at them : the job is done.
