Theory

a) 1er groupe : -ER

in the first group, there are more than 6,000 verbs, namely those ending in –ER (except for the verb “aller”)
group 1 verbs : appeler, chanter, danser, …

imparfait / passé composé / présent / futur

j’étudiais / j’ai étudié / j’étudie / j’étudierai

 b) 2ème groupe : -IR

in the second group, there are approximately 300 verbs, and they end in –IR and their present participle ends in –ISSANT
group 2 verbs : choisir, agir, obéir, réussir … 

finir
imparfait / passé composé / présent / futur

je finissais / j’ai fini / je finis / je finirai

 c) 3ème groupe : -IR, -OIR, -RE, aller

the third group encompasses four subcategories :
-IR, -OIR, -RE verbs as well as the verb “aller”
group 3 verbs : dire, percevoir, prendre, attendre … 

(1) mourir
imparfait / passé composé / présent / futur

je mourais / je suis mort / je meurs / je mourrai

(2) recevoir
imparfait / passé composé / présent / futur

je recevais / j’ai reçu / je reçois / je recevrai

(3) rendre
imparfait / passé composé / présent / futur

je rendais / j’ai rendu / je rends / je rendrai

(4) aller
imparfait / passé composé / présent / futur

j’allais / je suis allé / je vais / j’irai

 d) groupe : être, avoir

“to be” and “to have” are auxiliary verbs in French and do not belong to any of the aforementioned categories

j’étais / j’ai été / je suis / je serai

avoir
imparfait / passé composé / présent / futur

j’avais / j’ai eu / j’ai / j’aurai
