Theory

demonstrative pronouns are used to point to something specific within a sentence

personal demonstratives

the one (masc.)

celui

the one (fem.)

celle

the ones (masc. PL.)

ceux

the ones (fem. PL.)

celles


examples

1) combined with a relative pronoun

the one that he likes is blue

➔ celui qu’il aime est bleu

2) combined with –ci and –là
this one is more captivating than that one

âž” celui-ci est plus captivant que celui-lĂ 

 

3) followed by the preposition “de”
Dorian’s is brighter than John’s

âž” celui de Dorian est plus brillant que celui de John

impersonal demonstratives

this (masc.)

ceci

that (fem.)

cela (also, ça)

this/that, this is/that is, these are/those are

ce / c’est / ce sont

examples

1) ceci, cela (also, ça)

this interests her but that doesn’t

➔ ceci l’intéresse mais pas cela (or ça)

2) ce + pronoun nouns, pronouns, modified nouns

➔ c’est John, c’est lui, c’est un bon robot

 3) ce + dates

➔ c’est dimanche

 4) ce + expressing a sentiment

➔ c’est extraordinaire !

5) ce + superlative

➔ c’est le meilleur jambon sur Mars, quel bon jambon

6) ce + clause + c’est

➔ ce qui est comique, c’est que le robot parle plus que son maître
