Theory

an adverb is a word or phrase that modifies or qualifies an adjective, verb, or other adverb or a word group. it is always invariable.

what adverbs modify :

verbs : Il étudie beaucoup. he studies a lot

adverbs : Il travaille très bien. he works very well

adjectives : Cet appareil photo est très joli. this camera is very pretty

nouns : C’est une fille bien.  she’s a good girl

sentences : Certainement, il viendra te voir. certainly, he will come to see you

where to place adverbs :

before the adjective :

Elle est vraiment jolie. she’s really pretty

before another adverb :

Elle écoute très bien. she listens very well

after simple tense verbs (not compound) :

Je dors bien. I sleep well

after the auxiliary verb, before the second verb :

J’ai bien dormi.  I slept well

⚠️ a word of caution (1)

the adverb can be placed before or after the verb if it expresses a relation of time or place :

J’ai bien dormi hier.  ➔  Hier, j’ai bien dormi.

⚠️ a word of caution (2)

when using circumstantial complements – of manner in this example – the adverb modifying the verb is also movable. careful, this change of position can change the meaning of the sentence

Il me regarde bizarrement.
He’s looking at me in a strange way

Bizarrement, il me regarde.
Oddly enough, he’s looking at me
